Saturday, I drove past an old, rundown building I must have passed a thousand times. It is the remains of a service station and general store that was unfortunately located where few people live and sited so that it was difficult to drive in and out. Not a good choice for a business. The building has been vacant for as long as I can remember. Over the years I have seen hundreds of such abandoned buildings. They all look so lonely and desolate.

Of course, it wasn't always like that with those buildings. I always wonder about the people who originally built the old store building or the house that now lies in yards high weeds. I imagine that on the day the foundation was laid, the owner was so excited that he or she could barely conceal the excitement that threatened to spill over everyone near. What dreams went into the foundation of the old store? The owner never dreamed that his new venture was doomed to failure. He was looking to the future and all he saw were sunny, cloudless days, not an old abandoned building collecting pine needles and empty beer cans.

Wouldn't it be good to start each day as if we were off on some great adventure, building a new house that will be perfect, a new business that will satisfy our longing to make useful contributions or just starting out to do something we enjoy and never seeing the crumbling ruins when dreams die.
